Video: More Jimmy Carr on YouTube (plays the first 2 minutes)
9 Oct 2026The light in the dark
Heads-up: this one mentions a suicide attempt.
In the middle of a Jimmy Carr show, a note from a fan gets read out. A few years ago he was in a place so dark he couldn't see a way out, and the comedy gave him something to laugh at. Now he's out of hospital and sat in the audience with his partner. Watch Jimmy's face when he reads it.
Two things got me. He thanks the partner too: when you're low you end up on your own inside your head, and the people around you are part of the way back. And the bloke wrote it down and sent it in. That takes guts.
If you're in that dark place right now, it can get better, but don't wait it out on your own. Here's where to get help, today.

2 Oct 2026Switch off the news
This one really hit home. We're bombarded all day with events and disasters we can't do anything about, and over time it wears your mental health down without you even noticing. Remember "only deal with what's under your control"? The 24-hour news is the opposite of that. Try a week with less of it and see how you feel.
It pairs well with Atomic Habits from my books. That book helps you think about structure: swap the habit of checking the news for something that actually does you good, like a walk, a brew outside or ten minutes of quiet.

Hardware, not just software
When your head's a mess, check the basics first. Have you slept? Eaten properly? Been outside today? Fix the hardware and the software often sorts itself out.
